About
Many students who major in math succeed in business or science and technology-related careers, yet the strong analytical and problem-solving skills you will develop in Appalachian State University’s Mathematics (BA) degree can take you into other fields as well.
In this program, you will be required to study a foreign language and a minor of your choosing, which opens up many career possibilities. As a student in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, you will be taught by tenure track faculty in small classes and receive individualized attention both inside and outside of class. You will have opportunities to conduct research alongside a faculty member or participate in an internship.
If you think majoring in math is for you, it is important to begin the program of study during your freshman year or you may fall behind in course requirements.
After Graduation
The majority of math majors pursue graduate school in fields including mathematics, statistics, analytics, economics, operations research, mathematics education, computational chemistry, material science and public health. Others find jobs in business, most often in jobs with titles that include the work “analyst.”
Increasing numbers of high-performing students with a 3.4 GPA or higher are choosing to take graduate courses during their senior year through Appalachian’s Accelerated Master’s program, allowing them to complete a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in five years.
